Coming from the British Isles, with their long nautical traditions, I have inherited that deep association with the sea, ships and all the paraphenalia that goes with a nautical life. Although born in London, I was by the sea as often as possible once I grew up, and then moved to the south coast, in Dorset. Close to a lighthouse, of course, at Durslton just outside Swanage.

I am not a sailor, and cannot even swim, yet I feel very comfortable with anything nautical, and like many British people have a fascination about the sea, ships and ....lighthouses.

Many British pubs, inland as well as on the coast, have nautical and lighthouse decor; on the walls, above the bars, in the gardens and just about anywhere. Lighhtouse decoration themes are popular with pub customers, so it is not at all surprising that the public at large, in Britain and elsewhere look to lighhouse and other nautical themes to enhance their home decor. Lighthouses feature widely in the fittings and decorations as well as ornaments.,

One of the attractive features of lighthouses in general is that they have varied shapes and forms. While most traditional lighthouse are tall and columnar, there always seem to be some variations which gives each lighthouse its own character. Add in the individual skills of the decor designer, and you have plenty of options for unusual and unique lighthouse and other nautical decor.

Fortunately for the home owner, and interior designer, there

is a wide choice of lighthouse themed decor and furniture. From a simple lighthouse wall plaque (top), to the unusual Jupiter wall sculpture in the middle, with many other choices in between.

When it comes to furnishing and decorating the home, then you can usually find lighthouse tables and lamps which help maintain a nlighthouse theme. For decorating, wallpapers and boarders (nearest picture above) are widely available to satisfy your desire for things nautical, and especially lighthouse related.

There is something very traditional, nostalgic, yet warm and homely about the vision people most have of lighthouse, despite the reality of rough weather, poor living conditions and isolation that lighthouse keepers used to endure. But that does not inhibit the wide appeal of lighthouse decor.
